THE INQUEST ON THE BODY OF
JOHN BULSTRODE. Sydney (via Auckland), October 20.
Tho following evidence was adduced at the inquest on the body of John Bnlstrode, whose body was found floating in the water, near Potts Point, Wollomoloo Bay, (Sydney) on the morning of Friday, the 3rd October; John Cropton Malloy, pawnbroker, 901-2 Bathurst street, deposed that a man called at his.shop on the 2nd instand pawned with him a long dress coat, pocket handkerchief, clothes brush, and a packet of playing cards, upon which he lent os. He gave him him the usual pawn ticket. Witness asked him his name. His x’eply was Johnston. The man did not give his Christian name. He said he lived in the country, and put down his residence as Sydney. The dead body just viewed by the coroner and jury was that of the same man. Witness thought deceased said he came from Cambden, but was not snre. Deceased was sober when be-went to witness’s shop ; he had no appearance of having been oh the "spree. Constable Johnston deposed that he had his attention drawn on Friday morning, about half-past six o’clock, to a quantity of clothing on Cowper Wharf, Wollomoloo Bay. Witness described the clothing. He said that amongst other things in the pockets of deceased, he found a pocket-book, which appeared to be a betting book, on the corner of which was printed “J. Bulstrode, Greymouth,” in gold letters. Witness, after taking possession of the clothes, searched for the body, when he was informed that the body had been found floating in the water near Potts Point, by a fisherman named Fisk. The body was afterwards conveyed to the dead house.
Joseph Fisk deposed that on Friday he had his attention called by a blackfellow to a man in the water in Wollomolloo Bay. On looking over a fence, witness saw the body. He got a boat, secured it, and then gave information to the police. The place where witness found the body was between 200 and 300 yards from where the clothes were picked up. The body was floating about thirty yards from the shore.
Dr. Halkett deposed that death resulted from drowning. At tills stage the inquest was adjourned till ihe Monday morning, to allow the police to make further inquiries about deceased’s name. The names of several well-known betting
