At the Criminal Sessions to-day, before Judge Williams, Matthew William 1 Hawkins, who yesterday pleaded guilty to two'indictments charging him with! embezzlement, was brotfgbt «p for sentence. The prisoner had nothing tosay why sentence should not be passed' upon him. There were two indictments, and prisoner was sentenced to 1 six years' penal servitude on each, the 1 sentences to run concurrently. Alexander Rocard charged wit Ji cattle stealing, was acquitted. The Grand Jury returned a true bill in the case of James Smith, charged with the murder' of his wife. Thoma's Cha'lrfterS Heidi was charged upon an indictment, containing six counts with having fraudulently applied certain moneys, amounting, to £1446 7s 6tJ, the property of the Coioriial Building and Investment Society, to his own nso or to the use of his brother, J. C, Reid. The several counts were' placed in the indictmtnfi so as to charge him separately with dealing with the funds as alleged, either as a director or a shareholder, and with appropriating the money .unlawfully to his- own use or to the use of some' other persons other than for the purposes of the comparfy. The prisoner pleaded not guilty.
