The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1879.

Although our local member in the House of Representatives is designated by our special correspondent as the " irrepressiblo," which in other words means he cannot be put down, there is little doubt the appellation is well bestowed. Hardly twenty-four hours elapsed after the honorable gentleman had taken hi 3 seat in the House before we find he had called a caucus of the West Coast members at which the most important works in connection with the district were brought forward and not only received the support of all present, but the Hon. Mr Gisborne promised, on behalf of the Government, they should be undertaken, Last evening he succeeded in obtaining from the Government that instructions for immediate survey of the deviation of the Hokitika and Greymouth railway should be issued. Under these circumstances we believe his constituents will strongly support his irrepressible capabilities. A meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Town Hall last evening ; present—His Worship the Mayor (in the

chair), Councilors, Hanna, Campbell, Fitzimmons, Home, O'Hagan, Pearn, Pollock, and Pearson. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, as also the inward and outward correspondence, which was received and approved of. On the motion of Cr. O'Hagan, a grant of £SO was voted to the local Hos-. pital as a subsidy, the amount to be paid when the financial position of the Council would allow* An application from Messrs Finlayson and Simmonds asking the Council to support them in obtaining an extended area of ground, ad also some water-rights in the Borough for mining pupose3 was read, and it was resolved to facilitate the objects of the applicants so long as they did not interfere with the public works of the Borough. On the motion of Cr. O'Hagan the day labor man was to receive instructions to remove several large boulders in Tui and Third street. The railway petition drawn up by a committee appointed by the Council was read and approved of, and the Council adjourned for a fortnight. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather we would remind all lovers of the "light fantastic" that the ball in aid of the building fund of the new School at Westbrook will be held in the Theatre Royal this evening. As our neighbours on the other side of tho Teremakau are large supporters of the business community of this town we trust thia evening that irrespective of the attraction of the ball-room, the Westbrook Committee 1 will receive the hearty support of all in their undertaking and thereby further so desirable an object a 3 the education of the numerous children on the opposite side of the river.

The Committee who organised and tendered the late concert to Mrs Williams may be congratulated on the satisfactory balance-sheet they this day publish, as we feel assured that in this instance the amount of expenses incurred cannot be called in question by the most prejudiced person. In connection with this matter we are requested by Mrs Williams to tender her sincere thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who, by their services on the occasion, tended to secure her the acceptable pecuniary benefit she received; also to the Committee, who were the primary cause of this object being attained. Mr Mogdridge desires us to state that he was not the person referred to in our local re the nuptial event reported last evening, which statement we endorse. !£J™??L'?!.'.^?.""""""——*—
