THE MINERS’ MEETING AT AND PETITION FROM WESTBROOK.

[to the editor.] Sir —You will confer a great obligation upon the miners of this district if you will kindly inform the public of the name of the author of the ungrammatical twaddle which appeared in

your paper yestei'day, and which purported to he what it id ridfc —a petition praying for the construction of A track to Cape Terrace. We are merely miners; but still for all that we could lind in our rauks scores of men, even among o'nr small population, who could put our grievances iritd decent English, if necessity., Ifc is quite evident that the author pf the so-called petition was not raised in a district where the compulsory clauses of the Education Aofc were not in operation.—l am, &c, Henry J. Wilson.' Cape Terrace, September 23rd,' 1879. [We are unable to state the author of the petition referred to, but from a report of the proceedings which was supplied* to the Grey River Argua of the public meeting held at Westbrooke relative to this question, we notice that Mr Ditngan read a" petition and laid it on the table for inspection; As thitr gentleman kindly supplied us with the copy that our correspondent takes . objection to, we naturally iuferred .in! giving it publicity that it was a boua'-fide ; copy of the petition adopted at the meeting; Through no intimation being given tis of the ntee'tiiig taking place, although we strongly suggested this 1 course o( proeeedure, we regret we were debarred from obtainiaga verbatim' report of the proceedings on that occa' sion.— ErX K T.j
