We have little doubt that the miners of Westbrook will ever bear in grateful remembrance the names of the celebrated trio in the Grey County Council—Messrs Marshall, Reid, and Clifford—who yesterday, when a petition .-signed by 250 miners tvas presented to that body praying for the construction of a track at Cape Terrace, opposed the prayer of the petition being granted. Aud yet, forsooth, these three wise men of up-coUniry constituencies are supposed to represent the mining terests. Wit'i an extensive goldfield clearly defined, and the knowledge that when opened up it will foriri a source of direct revenue to the Grey County Council, the construction of a track to facilitate the transport of supplies to the very men engaged in developing this Bold, instead of receiving the unanimous support of the Council, is discarded through the action of three of its members. Could any' policy be of a more suicidal nature? The construction of this track would undoubtedly lead to fresh discoveries, as country never before trodden by the foot of man would be thoroughly prospected. A large gold field would necessarily increase the population in the Grey district, and an increase of county revenue is consequent on an increase of population.. With the present severe weather, the immediate construction of this track is rendered the. more necessary, and we trust that ere the special meeting is held on Tuesday next,- by the Grey County Council to again consider this question, Messrs Marshall- Eeid and Clifford will take the whole circumstances of the case into consideration and amend the error of their Avays by strenuously advocating the expediency aftd urgent necessity there is for the construction of this i work.-
