THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
[to XHftf EOITOR.] . Slß—At the last meeting of the Borough Council it was remarked that the revenue of the Borough was beings defrauded by the noninterference of the Police in carrying out the bye-laws, and especially the clauses relating to places of public amusement, besides' other matters. Now, sir, being a; resident and ratepayer in the town, I must perforce consider the Borough Council but a farce in '{vhich those who have the principle to submit are are mulcted by others who have not the same consideration for the public welfare. I will not condescend to argue the point, as it is palpable to every man in. the town, and needs no defence; all I can do is to denounce such humbnging and exert any influence I may wield to do away with such a puerile body as the Borough Council of Kumara, and join to the County, whereby we would not be pestered by such petty annoyances as at present exist here, and at the same time would, be governed enough. We have ptfpf every day of the inefficiency local JPUnicil; they either cannot or will not enforce the laws, and many are at present acting contrary to them and laughing a£ those who are fools enough to submit. What is our Town Clerk doing that he’ do'es not see that they are carried out, 1 if not in their

I for one protest against such maladministration, and have done so before, and will not cease my outcry lentil something be clone for the sake of fair piny and justice. Gnr Inspector of nuisances, forsooth, considers his accepted duties (infra dig). The Police cannot interfere, the Tbwn Clerk c mid not be expected personally to do so, but mjiny think he liiight do a little more than he does in the carrying out of our local code. I would not advocate the exaction of the pound of flesh, lint would crave the protection of tlie Council in Matters when the evasion of their laws entails hardship ,and loss upon those ■ivlio conform to them.—l am, &c., Ratepayer Kumara; Sept. 19th, 1879.
