Mr Puckey has promised to inform them when war has been declared. The pigeon has arrived from Omaha, a'nd reports the Ngatihakoe as being most friendly. They are very anxious to know what the Government intend to do in the matter. The Post, to night, says that his Excellency the Governor intimated to the Premier In’s opinion that the result of the general elections was apparently of so indefinite a character ou the issue submitted to the country—viz, that of confidence in the Grey Government—that he does not feel justified accepting from Ms present Ministers advice on matters outside the ordinary routine of 'administration until the new Parliament has an opportunity of reversing the adverse verdict so emphatically pronounced by the late one. The Government steainer Hinemoa leaves to-day to bring down the northern members to-morrow morning. The following notice appears in? the Gazette:—“Whereas a person named George Yernell, of New Brighton road, near Christchurch, in the Provincial district of Canterbury, has mysteriously disappeared, arid there'are reasons for supposing that be may have been murdered by some person or pers >ns unknown, notice is hereby. given that, should the said George Vernell have been murdered his Excellency the Governor will grant a free pardon to' any person, implicated in such murder, except the actual murderer, who will give such information as Will lead to' the apprehension and conviction of the murderer or murderers.— John Sheehan. : ■ Dunedin, Sept. 19. Some of the 75 men taken on by the Corporation started work this morning, and the Public Works Department was literally besieged by people eager for work, t upwards of 130 obtaining throughout the df»y free passes to Mullochy Gully.
