It is easy to defend the island, and 1600 men would be a sufficient garrison for the group in time of war, and 200 in time of peace. The case of Edmond Galley, who was convicted at Exeter in 1836 for the murder of a farmer named May, has been discussed in the Rouse of Commons. . The prisoner was sentenced to transportation to Australia. Doubts of his guilt caused several investigations, but repeated Home S-cretarys refused to disturb the verdict. Sir E. Wilmott, moved that Galley's innosence being now established beyond all reasonable doubt, tlie Queen should be asked for a pardo-i, all mention of innocence being omitted. Opinion is freely expressed that a formal Court of Appeal, rather than the Home Office, is required to settle' cases of disputed guilt. Mr Galley is seventy-five (75) years of age, and poverty-stricken. He will appeal to the Commons for compensation for a fifty years' wrori".
