At a meeting of the Committee of the Literary Institute held last evening, the report, of the sub-committee appointed to draw up a scheme for the formation of a, horary in connection with, the Institute was read, and with a few amendments adopted. Messrs Coghlaii, Smart, Petrie, and Wells wove appointed a sub-com-mittee to receive donations of hooks and money ; and the Rev. E. A. Scott, and Messrs Janion and Smart were elected to draw tip a list of books which would be required to start the library. We have received from the publisher. The pvix.e for second place will be divided between Low Bells and Conrad. A fatal disaster took place at Croiistadt. A torpedo boat attached to the frigate of Admiral Lazareff, after practice with torpedoes suspended on spars erected in front of the bow of the launch, exploded and destroyed the launch. Of twentytwo men on board, live were instantaneously killed, and seven dam-ru-on-ly wounded. Several have since died. The remainder received slight woeods. [t is said Hiat the torpedo was charged with W'u». of pyroxylioer. The accident is attributed to carelessness.
The outbreak of cholera in J;ipan is very serums. Kobe and the neighboring tov/as sull'ered most. A telegram was received from Shanghai on the 7th July, stating that olK< people had died in the place named above a few days ago. The Japanese authorities are enforcing quarantine regulations. A lively discussion is going on in Shanghai amongst the foreign doctor.? as to the cause and nature of cholera, and opinion is divided as to whether the emrlagiou is transmitted bv the water or the atmosphere, or in some other way. An angry feeling exists between China and Japan respecting the sovereignty of rue JjiHi Cho;> Islands. A rupture has been confidently predicted, but though matters have not gone so far yet, China has recently placed her coast defences in the hands of one of the ablest mandarins, and it looks as though siie were preparing for emergencies. Tim following curious mistake has been brought to lighi by the Suiyihosdale correpou.'.lout of the Dallarat Star, who writes : '' A Sandhurst paper of Monday last contains a very curious misprint or typographical error. It says that on Sunday the Rev. W. H. Croxton preached an excellent sermon from the text, Genesis, chapter xxx, verso 17—' And Satan said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thine eyes, tarry ; for I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake.' On looking at the chapter and verse referred to, it will be found that Satan is substituted for Laban, the father-in-law of Jacob—a very bad exchange for Jacob."
