Now that the new rush at Wcstbrook has assumed the character of a large and permanent gcklfield, the one great desideratum necessary is a truck, to enable the miners engaged in these workings the means of easy communication with AVe-itbrook. When in September, 1877, the Grey County Council offered a reward of .£250 to the discoverer of a new goklfield, whether alluvial or quartz, which would support 250 men, not necessarily engaged in mining', for twelve calendar j months after such discovery had been • i reported to the Council, they did so with the object of both offering- an inducement to prospecting and also a view to encourage an industry which as it .were is the life-blood of the Coast. As a gold field has now been discovered j in the Grey County, which we have no hesitation in affirming from present appearances will eventually in every way meet the requirements of the conditions appertaining tc the reward then offered, it now lies with the Grey County Council to foster this irnpoi taut dip-' covery in their own interests by the immediate construction of a trade, so as to enable supplies and material to lie conveyed to the ground not only with i afety, but at reasonable rates of ■ remuneration to all parties concerned A continuation of the track on the other side of the wire bridge over the Greenstone Creek, for about ,s 0 chains along the terrace would, meet lee oresent reipun ments of the case, ami we understand that- this work could b°> undertaken and carried out for about •"■O-i. per chain. We strongly commend j the attention and earnest consideration <>f the Grey r 'oim'y Council to this 'j matter, as while the cons!ruction of } Mns track would be of material benefit 1 t>> the miners, at the. .same tim-' it must
he borne in mind tlv-it the Council, by i the opening up of this goMfield will be ; largely benefited thereby, in the augmentation of its receipts from gold duty and miners' rights. In the meantime we would suggest that a public meeting be called at Westbrook by the miners ac which resolutions could be passed affirming (he desirability and urgency of live construction of this track. These resolutions, placed in the hands of the member l oilmen ting that district in the Council should, backed by personal representations, be an additional spur to arouse that body to the necessity of at once commencing this much needed and essential work. We would remind intending contractors that the tenders for lining the Church of England will close to-morrow evening. The first competition for the Company medal of the first Wetland Rifles was fired at Mokitika on Saturday last, when the medal was won by Vol. Oliver, with a score of (14 points. The medal has to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals before becoming the absolute property of the winner. We notice none of our local marksmen took part in the competition. Tenders are invited by the Westland Education Board for the erection of school building;; at Cobclon, plans and specifications of which work can be seen at Town Clerk's Office. A telegram from Wostport has been received in Wellington stating that Mr Fisher, who was elected for the Bulier a day or ago is disqualified, owing to his .having failed to his resign his appointment as Crown prosecutor before contesting the election. Lieutenant Carey, who was with the Prince Imperial when he was shot, is cousin to a gentlemen in Napier, and nephew of Major Carey, 13th Royal Irish, who distinguished themselves against the Maoris at Orakau. I The Sultan of Zanzibar* has expressed I himself willing and desirous of assisting the scheme of Mr James Bradshaw, of Manchester, for opening out Central Africa. He will grant a concession of Land for the proposed railway, which, in the opinion of his highness, would develop an extensive trade with the interior.
