A crowded meeting of miners was held at the Empire Hall, Dillnian's last evening, Mr M'Kenzie in the chair, to take into consideration the action of the deputation who interviewed the Hon. W. Gisborno relative to the sludge-channel. After considerable discussion, and a, large amount of cross-questioning, the following resolution moved by R. J. Seddon, Esq., M. H.R., -was almost unanimously carried—" That in the opinion of this meeting, and after hearing the opinions of practical men, supported as such opinions are by the Government Engineers, it is desirable that the contract should let for the sludge-channel immediately." The following gentlemen were then appointed a deputation to wait on Mr Gow relative to the subject," with power to suggest such alterations as the present specifications would admit :—Messrs Seddon, Lloyd, Bavrowman, Hopkins, Richards, Murdoch, Wyldo, Pearn, Blake, Skipper, Everett, Reynolds, and the chairman. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the the proceedings. Although the muncipal election 3'esterday did not create any special excitement I the burgesses nevertheless quietly and numerously exercised their priviliges,t\vo out of the three old members being again returned. The votes recorded were as follows :—O'Halgan, 78 ; Campbell, 70 ; Pierson, 68 ; and King, 24. We should strongly advise those persons who have not yet seen Rainers Panorama of the Russo-Turkish War to avail themselves of the opportunity offered this evening, as to-morrow night it will be on view for the last time in this town. The chief prize to be given this evening is a darning machine of which there are but very few in use at the present time. Any person having a claim against Mv Seddon's committee can have the same liquidated on application to the Secretary of the Committee at the Buck's Head Hotel, this evening. A telegraph station is now open at Wyndiuun, in the County of Southland. Messrs Cuming and Woods the wellknown bakers of this town to-day dissolved
partnership by mutual consent. The business will in future be carried on by Mr Woods only. .
