The election of three members for the Borough Council, was held to-day, but at tlie time of our going to press tho poll had not closed. At the Resident Magistrates Court this morning before Charles Broad, Esq., R-M., L. Wiltshire and L. Rees, two unfortunates, for an assault on Mrs Barry, were sentenced to one month’s imprisonment each. The woman Wiltshire was also fined 20s, or seven days’ imprison l sonmeut for an assault on Annie Wells. There were one of two civil cases of no public importance. Wc learn that another tunnel claim on the new ruvh struck good payable gold yesterday afternoon, but as til o accounts of the actual prospects obtained materially differ wc are ‘unable at present to give reliable information oh this particular point. - . : . The new Panorama of the Russo-Turk-isli "War, exhibited for the first time at the Theatre Royal last evening, is one that cannot fail to attract attention and excite admiration. Tho views presented, nor only as paintings but as works of art, were justly entitled to the repeated applause the}’ received as they 7 severally came before the eyes of the audience.. The views of “ Constantinople,” the “British licet entering the Dardanelles,’ and several others must be seen to be appreciated, as it is utterly impossible to described the life-like and vivid fidelity of these magnificent pictures. ■ A very handsome lock-stitch sewing-machine formed tho chief present last evening, and to-night a valuable gold watch will be the first prize. As an impression prevails amongst the public that the Panorama is and “ old friend” and that on those grounds they withdraw their naivonage, we may say in justice to the proprietors and also to remove any doubt in retard thereto that may exist, that although a Panorama under a similar designation was shown here previously the one now on view is totally dnfiereut. It is to be earnestly hoped that in the interest of the district some definite conclusion as to the immediate constrncion of the sludge-channel, or otherwise, will he arrived at by the public meeting called to take this matter into consideration this evening at Dillman’s. In another column Mr Barff thanks the electoiv. of the Hokitika district wild supported him in his candidature fur re-elec-tion to tue House-ot Representative. Wo are requested to draw special attention to an advertisement of Mr S. S. Pollock’s in another column which we have pleasure in doing, inasmuch as the announcement is pecuniary gratifying in these depressing times. A diabolical attempt to lire the town of Copneriield, Queensland, has been discmexcd. Pile? of unused stores were found smeared with tar and saucepans full of burning tar at short distances, Tlie stores contained half a hundred weight of powder. Ihe discovery was made at 2 o'clock in the morning. Had it bean delayed 10 minute tho whole town would ha vo been in dames.
“ iSinbad,” in the Weakly Press, has the following : —“ Mr Dakin, who is training Le Loup, is very sanguine about his Cup chances, and writes to his owner that he is doing as weil as his most sanguine backers could wish. On Sunday night the imported Kndwsly mare Aglaia dropped a beautiful colt foal to Traducer. The colt is without exception the biggest thoroughbred foal I ever saw.”
