The Schooner Laurel, '-'laden with, timber, from Pic ton to Lytteltori, bocame waterlogged in the Straits, and was abandoi £1 by Captain Swede and crnw. They were p.eked up by the Mary Bell, and afterwards transferred to the Lytteltm, steamer,.and brought on to Wellington last night.. THE ELECTIONS. Wellington, Sept. 10. The successful candidates yesterday were :-r-Ireland, for Waikaia ; Murray, for Bruce; Barronj for Caversham ; Reader Wood, forWaitemata; O'Rorke, for Onehunga. Major Te Wheoro is 236 votes aheadfor the Western- Maori district; and. Tainui for Southern. Maori district. ' The returns so far in for the Northern Maori district gives Sydney Taiawhanga 301, and Hoani Nahe*3o6. The others are over a hundred behind. Tlie Taieri return gives Falton, 195 ;' Snow, 152.
