[press agency.] FIRE IN DUNEDIN.—EIGHT PERSONS BURNED TO DEATH. Dunedin, Sept. 8. One of the mpst terrible calamities that ever occurred in Done din happened this morning in the Octagon, when Mr Walter’s Cafe took fire at about 2.30 a.in. Next the Cate was the shop, of Mrs Wilson, wife of the editor of the Witness. The block, numbered some four shops, but the landings were all thickly peopled, and as the whole of the lower part was in flames before being discovered, escape was impossible for the majovity, It is known that Willson’s family numbering ten persons are all lost excepting two, one of whom jumped out of the' window, and it is feared is injured beyond recovery. From a statement made by a person who escaped by lowering himself with a clothes line, it would appear that a number of persons were lying in the passage, through which he had to gronpe, apparently suffocated-. The few persons who escaped are badly cut and injured ; one man who leaped from the window to the pavement wag killed. The whole block of buildings is gutted, but as Are is still raging, and excitement intense, it is impossible to ascertain anything with accuracy. Nelson, Sept. 6.
