The Academy of Music, the prettiest theatre in Melbourne, and the Victoria Arcade, with 27 years to run, only realised £30,490—£15,000 less than they cost. A foreigner living at Drysdale was bequeathed £2OO, and spent it in a general shout for everybody in the district. NEW SOUTH WALES. Archbishop Vaughan refuses to confirm children attending public schools. The secular press almost unanimously condemn the paatroal letter. At Goulbnrn most of the congregation left the church before the bishop had finished reading it, A a meeting of 500 Sydney unemployed a petition was sent to the Government asking them to proceed with the public works mentioned in the Loan Bill. In consequence of the earnest demand for University education for women, the University will endeavour to meet it. The Sydney Daily Courier, a Protectionist paper, has ceased to exist. The amended quarantine regulations enacts that all stock arriving free from infection shall be quarantined only at the discretion of the Chief Inspector. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. The Bunks agree to furnish the Government with something under a million, accepting as security the bonds of the authorised loan. QUEENSLAND. The Brisbane exhibition opens on 30ch July, and promises to be very successful. The collections of minerals, wool, timber, pearl shells, fibres, and ttock, are very fine.
