The English Ambassador attended the requiem mass in Paris for the repose of the Prince’s soul. The French Government took precautions against any demonstration at the mass of requiem for the Prince Imperial. The troops in barracks were confined to quarters, and the police were ordered to arrest anybody indulging in Bona par tist cries. The London Post suggests the erection of a monument to the Prince. The Duke of Cambridge sanctions raisings subscriptions in the army for a national memorial. Ihe Queen commanded the Channel fleet to escort the troopship Oroutes, containing the Prince’s body. Her Majesty also directed the Royal Regiments of Artillery to meet the body at Woolwich and escort it to Chiselhurst. The Peruvian ironclad ram ITuascar, recently bombarded Antofogasta, silencing the shore batteries which are armed with Krupp guns. The Peruvians failed in the object of attack, which contemplated the destruction of the water condensers necessary for the garison and town, which is the base of the Chilian army of invasion. The Chilians had forty-eight hours’ notice of the attack and protected the condensers with bags filled with sand. The Huascar’s captured two Chilian ships, copper laden and sent them to Callao. She cut the cable connecting Antofogasta with Caldera and sailed to Iquiqe, from whence she had barely escaped when the Chilian squadron which had gone to Callao, appeared in the offing. The Husacar’s superior speed enabled her to escape after exchanging harmless, shots, Admiral Reballi, with the Chilian fleet approached Callao to encounter the Peruvian’s, when he learnt that the Peruvian fleet had sailed South with President Prado, who was landed at Arrea. During their absence the Esmeralda was rammed by the Husacar and sunk.
