It is intended to appoint a deputation of the Inangahna Council to proceed to Weilington, and to present the petition asking for the extension of the main trunk line of railway northwards through the Grey, Inangahna, and Boiler Valleys to Nelson. The result of the poll for the election of a member for the House of Representatives for the Southern Maori district was declared at Eaiapoi on the 16th, when the numb rs ■were— Tainui, 191; Trihaka, 78; Paratene, 60 ; majority for Tainni 113. The above is the largest number of votes ever polled in electorate, and the largest majority ever obtained by any candidate. Sixteen pounds weight of stone from a reef in Collingwood were crushed in Wellington by Mr Reeves, M.H.E., and yielded 2oz Idwt of gold. The tailings when analysed by Dr Hector, yielded at the rate of 84oz 19dwt 20grs to the ton. The above result shows the necessity of miners and companies of the various reefs in this district accepting the offer of the Sydney Exhibition Commissioners, as tendered through the local committees, and send samples of the tailings to be treated by the new, and said to be inexpensive, process to be adopted at the Exhibition, as it has been proved over and over again that more gold is lost in the tailings than was ever taken from the stone originally, and if a cheap process could be introduced reefs that now barely pay expenses or are altogether unprofitable, would yielri handsome returns, It seems that members of the New Zealand House of Lords sometimes forget to square their little accounts at Bellamy’s before leaving Wellington at the end of the session, and this most be something considerable, as the Hon Mr Waterhouse introduced Hie matter at the meeting of the Legislative Council on Wednesday, stating that “it was a practice of'eome hon members to leave their scores npaid after the session.” As a matter bf course all the Councillors present expressed a hope that the practice would be put a stop to.
