The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, JULY 17, 1879.

A largeiy attended meeting of ratepayers and electors was held at the Oddfellows Hall, Stafford Town last evening i to take into consideration the proposals to ■ form a new County, the deviation of the Hokitika and Greymouth Railway, and the restricting of Chinese immigration. Mr Davidson occupied the chair, and the three members for the district in the County Council (Messrs S'eddon, M‘V\ liirtor, and Saudle) were present. After the conveners of the meeting had most minutely and satisfactorily explained the various objects for which the meetim' was called, resolutions affirming the desirability of the three obje ts under discussion being carried out were passed unanimously. The Mayor of Kumar a (Mr Blake), also spoke at some length on the subject of the deviation of the railway, and assured those present that they might rely on the support and co-opera-tion of the portion of the district he represented in endeavouring to obtain the i deviation of the line. Neither the County 1 Chairman nor District Engineer attended, although it was publicly stated that telegrams had been forwarded to these gentlemen notifying the convening of the meeting. A meeting of the local School Committee was held at the Town Hall yesterday when notice of motion was given to bring the compulsory clause of the Education Act into force within the district. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before C. Broad, Esq,, R.M., there were only one or two small debt cases of no public interest. Nineteen nominations has been received for thirteen members required to form the new Committee of Management for ■ the Kumara Hospital. Full particulars as to the election will appear in our advertising column to-morrow.
