Wellington, July 16. The Minister of Minos appears hostile to the proposal to cancel the Kumara Education Reserve. He was given notice of a bill to further increase the burden of leaseholders. This is in direct violation of the understanding with Mr Bar If, who will move, on the second reading, to refer the Bill to the Goldfields Committee.
Political matters very mixed. Members generally are dissatisfied with the Premier, but like the Hon. Mr Fox but little better.
The Government whips made a terrible muddle re the Chairman of Committees. They tried hard for Mr Bunny, and immediately their supporters pledged themselves to Mr Seymour.
Mr Feldwick’s Local Option Bill is intended as an insult for the Hon. Mr Fox. Mr Fe.kiwick is decidely not a Good Templar. It is quite certain that the Government will withdraw some of their measures if they remain in office.
The defeat of Government is probable. Messrs Thomson and Gisborne and nothing to their strength

Mr Martin will resign at the end of the session, and go to America, where he intends to reside permantly. Government supporters admit that parties in the Home are as near equally divided as possible. July 15. The Opposition will not oppose the loan in the present financial state of the country. When tne lion. Mr Whitaker was proposed as ieader of the Opposition, he decline:l on the plea of private business, but strongly recommended that the Hon. Air Fox he chosen, whom he had known as an honest politician for many years. July 16. It is understood that the Opposition will not take hostile action on the Address in Reply, hut immediately afterwards will table a direct vole of want of confidence, specifically accusing tne Government of maladministration. The Opposition members state that the Premier will second the Hon, MiFox’s motion to appoint Mr Sevmonr Chairman of Committees.
