Parliament was opened at noon to-day, and just before going to press we received information that the Governor’s speech, consisting of some thousands of words, was in course of telegraphic transmission. The annual meeting of the subscribers to the Kumara Hospital will be held at the Town Hall this evening. His Worship the Mayor will take the chair, at eight o’clock. After the report and balance-sheet of the Committee of management has been adopted, nominations will be received for the election of the new Committee. To save any unnecessary trouble we might state that the nomination papers require to be signed by two subscribers of 10s or upwards to the Hospital, and also by the candidate who must be also a subscriber or ticketholder. We trust that on this occasion the attendance will be numerous. The meeting of the subscribers of the Kumara Literary Institute which was to have taken place last evening, was formally adjourned for a week'.
Meetings are convened by the representatives of the district in the Westland County Council to consider proposals for a Hew County, the Railway deviation, and Chinese Immigration. The first meeting will be held at Stafford Town tomorrow evening when no doubt satisfactory reason will be given by the conveners for their action in this matter.
We are glad to learn that Mr Thomas, of Dillman’s Town, who was removed to the Hospital on Sunday last, in consequence of a severe accident he received while felling timber the previous afternoon, is now progressing favorably, but it will be sometime before he fully recovers from the effects of the accident. The benefit to be tendered to Mr Schultzo on the Ist pros, by his friends :, nd countrymen should prove a musical treat, as those engaged therein are by constant rehearsal attaining surprising proficiency. The full programme will appear in our issue of Friday next.

In the last number of the Bicycling News there is a list of all the accidents that have occurred in the London district during the past 12 months, and out of 3100 accidents only 13 were occasioned by bicycles. Considering that there are something over 10,000 bicycles in daily use in London alone this looks as if the members oi Clubs were not quite so careless as some of their antagonists are trying to make out.
