Christchurch, July 10. It is rumored tbat the inhabitants of the northeren part of Ashley Country are dissatisfied with their local government, and propose to take steps for erection into another Country. Lewis was acquited of arson to-day though the Judge summed up dead against him. This is the third arson charge this session which has resulted iu acquittal; Denis Dillon was found guilty of false pretences, and sentenced to six months' imprisonment. This concludes the criminal session of the Supreme Court. A quarryraan at Halswel, a few miles from town, named William Betrudge, was killed to-day. The rope was suspended from the face of the wall and was cut by a falling boulder, and he fell 30feet and was quite dead when picked up. He leaves a widow and two children.

July 11. A very heavy fall of snow took place to-day, by a strong south-westerly gale. In town the snow is several inches deep while on the high country land it is as much as three feet in many places. Grain market is unchanged, and remains inactive ; very little wheat is offering, prime samples being worth 3s 5d to 3s 7d ; barley, 4s 6d ts 5s ; and oats, Is 5d to Is 9d, nominal. TuiARU, July 10. It is said that the Timaru School Committee intend to resign en masse owing to the action of the Board of Education re appointment of second master.

There were again nominations to-day for the four vacant seats in the Tiinaru Borough Council.

The debentures for the Tiinaru Waterworks Loan will be forwarded by the outgoing Sau Francisco mail. At a meeting of the creditors of David Owners, a grocer, to-day, the liabilities were set down at <£233S, and assets at £1773.
