The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, JULY 12, 1879.

The new rush at Westbrooke is, in accord.nce with a previously-expressed opinion, gradually developing into what will probably eventually prove one of the best and most remunerative goldfields opened for some time on this coast. It was at first supposed that the lead of gold only ran parallel with and on the edge of the terrace, but this idea has proved to be an erroneous one, as a party who have driven in 400 ft. from the opposite side have, we are informed, obtained prospects of half a pennyweight to the dish. Two new tunnels are being driven in in close proximity to the prospectors' claim, which are expected to strike the wash at about 150 ft., and the completion of these are now anxiously looked for, as it is expected they will definitely determine the direction taken by the lead.

The anniversary ball and supper of the Bible and Crown Loyal Orange Lodge, held at the Public Hall last evening, was largely attended and thoroughly enjoyed by those present. The supper which preceded the ball was most tastefully and artistically arranged, reflecting the greatest credit on the caterer, Mr Robertson, as it comprised all the delicacies of the season, served in a manner that could but satisfy the most fastidious epicure. The ball which followed presented a scene most pleasing in effect, as the decorations of the Hall, consisting of draped Hags, evergreens, and roses, interspersed with the mottos and emblems of the order, were greatly enhanced in brightness by the

vavious colours of the ladies' dresses and the regalia of their partners. Dancing was kept up with great spirit till an early hour this morning to the strains of a most efficient band.

We -would again draw attention to the meeting of the members of the Kumara Literary Institute which takes place on Monday evening next and at the same time point out how desirable it is for all those who have the interests of a institution of this nature at heart to be present on the occasion. There is little doubt that since the opening of the Institute many persons have availed themselves of its means of spending an evening pleasautly and intellectually, although it is to be regretted that the number of subscribers have been at times barely sufficient to afford the necessary funds for providing this edifying recreation. We trust that this unpleasant state of affairs may be effectually remedied by the public attending as subscribers on Monday next.

During the ball at the Public Hall lastevening some mischievous larrikin deliberately threw a stone through one of the skylights, from outside, breaking the glass and causing great inconvenience, besides the damage.

A meeting of the Loyal Albert Lodge of Oddfellows is convened for Monday evening next on business of importance.

A specialty, for invalids particularly, is announced by Mr S. S. Pollock, in the form of a consignment of Feltoe's 1845 sherry, which has just come to hand. Should the bulk equal the sample we had the pleasure of testing, its virtues are sufficient to make the Hospital a tenantless building in a fortnight.

News has been received from Alexander Forrest's exploring party, which reached Roebuck Bay, Western Australia, towards the end of April, all well. Magnificent country was passed through between Deguley River and the furthest point then reached by the party, especially round Beagle Bay, opposite Lacepede Islands. Mr. Forrest says he saw 4,000,000 acres fully capable of carrying 1,000,000 sheep. The water is chiefly from fine springs, and there is abundance everywhere. The natives are quiet. Noumea (New Caledonia) dates to 26th June state about 2,400 persons, including soldiers and returning seamen, had left, or were about to leave, for France. The frigate Calvados, from Melbourne, arrived on the 15th. Mining, with the exception of the Balade Copper Mine, had ceased. The affairs of the New Caledonia Bank were being slowly wound up. It his supposed that the creditors will receive (35 to 70 per cent, in the course of a year or two.

So great are the apprehensions of an attack on the Vatican that the Pope has made a confidental inquiry of foreign Governments as to whether he could rely on their protection, and from some of them he has received a reply in the affirmative. His relations with the state seem to be improving, for he has at length permitted a building within the precincts of the Quirinal, where the King of Italy i-esides, to be arranged as a chapel. The palace itself still remains under interdict.

Mr W. Wiliavay having sold his plans and interest in the Dyeixg Business to Mr R. Upjohx (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, Ac, in the best style. N.B.—Gentlemen's clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises.—Aovt.
