A writer in the Echo has unearthed some remarkable statistics respecting the amount of public money received by the second Marquis Camden, who died a year or two ago. A s part of the reward to his father for giving up the permanent position of Lord Chief Justice for the insecure one of Lord Chancellor m the Chatham Ministry a sinecure tellership of the Exchequer was bestowed upon the son, who had at the time jast attained his 21st year. The emoluments of the poßt then only amounted to L 250 < a year, but during the American War thev ? 0 o™ L7ooo ' and b y 1807 t 0 no less than 1.23,000 per annum. The subject was brought before Parliament by Mr Greevy but Lord Camden still held his tellership though he never had anything to tell, and at the time he was forced to resign in consequence of the increasing scandal the value of the post was between L 30.000 and L 40,000 a year. On his resignation it was agreed to pas him a fixed annual sum of L 3683, and it is calculated that this eminent placeman had, when he died in 1840 re- ? e oo! ( L altogefcher the m o de at sum' of L 825.000 for doing literally nothing. Whatever gratitude the nation might have owed IT , C^ aßCellor Camden, it must be admitted that they acknowledged it in a pretty nandsome manner to to the son. The finest sample of practical te!eoraphy which has probably ever been witnessed, oc curred recently between London and Ire Jand.
