THE SLY GROG NUISANCE.

[to the editor.] Snt—ln your issue of the 9 th, "Justice" appears to he annoyed at the G. Ts. not taking the sly grog nuisance in hand ; but G. Ts. are banded together to protest against the liquor traffic in general, and not sly grog selling in particular j it is everybody's duty to try and put that down. I dont think the shanties are the cause of all the drunkenness at Kun.ara, as " Justice" would have us believe. I have often seen men rolling out of public-houses on Sunday afternoon drunk. The Licensing Officer said at the last Licensing Court that he could not refuse a license to any house if the police had no complaints to make against it. I t ink if the police did their duty, there would be plenty of complaints. I call it a regular farce to cloee the front door at 11 o'clock, and keep the side door and bar open as long as they can take a shilling. The same thing is done on S-mday, although the front door is closed,.the bar is open, and drinking carried on the same as any other day in the week; and I would draw the atteution of the police to this fact. As " Justice" remarks, there is a strange state of affairs in this town at present; when a publican sits on the Bench, and fines a man for being diurik, no wonder at G.Ts. howling against the publicans. G.Ts. would like to see a Licensed Victuallers Association at Kumara ; they would look after the shanties, and we would look after them.—l am, &c, E. Wright, 1.0.G.T., And not ashamed to sign my name. July 10, 1879.
