BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Town Hall last evening; present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Campbell, Fitzsimruons, Home, King, Pollock, Hanna, and Pearn. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence wag read and approved of, and the inward read, received, and considered seriatim. It was resolved, in answer to an application from the Chief Postmaster, to have an approach made to the Tramway Station, so as to enable the mail coach and other vehicles to turn without having to drive to the corner of the Zigzag, as at present. On an application from the Hospital Committee for the use of the Town Hall on Tuesday next for their annual meeting, and also asking the Council to vote a subsidy of £SO towards the Hospital being considered, Cr. Pollock said that as the Fire Brigade and Benevolent Society had both been subsidised by the Council, he thought that the Hospital was justly entitled to the same, as if anything ib was the most deserving institution. Cr. Pearn moved " That the use off the Town Hall be granted, as requested by the Hospital Committee ; but that the question of the subsidy stand over until the next meeting;" which was seconded by Cr. King, and carried. On the motion of Cr. Hanna seconded by Cr. Pearn, the Town Clerk was instructed to write to the Minister of Public Works, and also to the members for the district requesting them to on the Government the desirability of making the deviation in the Greenstone road at the Zigzag, as proposed, and shown on plan when the new bridge over the Teremakau was first commenced, A petition from a number of ratepayers in Sedden street, asking the Council to make a track by which thev could obtain access to their ground was granted, the work to be performed by the day labour man. Pearn seconded, "That a geueral rate of one shilling in the £ be on the Valuation Roll of the as set forth in the rate book of tMte Borough ; such rate to be due and payable in one sura on August Ist, 1879." The Mayor, in moving " That i Ikcomplete formation of Main and Seddon streets with the footpaths be procot -d<-d with simultaneous')', the wuin; lengi.ii of each street being foim<d, and that, the selection of the portions of oach street to be formed be left to tin; Public Works Committee"—said he tabled the motion with the idea that the Council should deal fairly with all localities in town. He thought no jealousy could exist if this matter was carried out, as both streets lequired the same amount of outlay, and by equalising the expenditure they would be dealing fairly with both parts of the town. Or. Pearn seconded the motion, as he thought nothing could be fairer or more just; and, on the motion being put, it was carried unanimously. Cr. Home, by leave of the Council, moved that a lamp be erected at the C irner of First and Seddon street which was seconded by Or. Hanna, and carried. The name of Cr. Pearn was added to the Public Works Committee, and the Council then adjourned.
