Graham was charged at the Waimate Police Court yesterday wath violently assaulting Thomas Martin, by striking him on the head with an axe. The wounded man is in a dangerous state, several pieces of bone having bad to be extracted from his skull. The accused was remanded. Mr Turnbull, M.H.R., left for the north to-day by express train, with many southern members. Mr Wakefield will probably leave to-morrow. Dunedin, July 7. Captain Baldwin and Mr Reeves are mentioned as likely candidates for the City. In the Supreme Court to-day the following persons were sentenced : Jane Tremble, for stealing a sewing machine, 15 mouths’ bard labor; Etfia White, stealing clothes, six months’ do ; James White, larceny as a bail ‘e, 18 months’ do.

July 8. At the Supreme Court, to-day, John Cooney and Robert Fuller, convicted of robbery, were sentenced, the former to two years’, the latter to three months’ hard labor. Wilson & Co., in which plaintiff sought to recover £lB, being at the rate of 10s in, the £, on the amount of his account against Eddington, Bust & Co., whose estate defendants at fust agreed to take over, and afterwards, owing to alleged deceit on the part of the debtors, refused, Judgment was given for plaintiff, iu order that the case might go to a higher court of appeal.
