The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, JUNE 23, 1879.

: A telegram was received this afternoon by the conveners of the late public meeting anent the sludge-channel, from S. Thome George, Esq., M.H.R., stating that the resolution passed had been received by him, and laid before the Minister of Public Works, who would bring the matter before the Cabinet to-morrow.

The funeral of the late Rev. G. T. N. Watkins, of Greymouth, took place last Saturday afternoon, and was attended by nearly 2000 persons. The Bishop of Nelson, assisted by the Rev. Mr Kempthorne of Reefton, read the burial service of the Church of England, after which the cofiin was lowered into the grave by the Masons, the scene being a grandly impressive one, as the setting sun shone beautisully at the time. The Deputy District Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons (Brother Bevan), then came forward, and solemly and distinctly read the Masonic service, the vast assemblage remaining uncovered till the conclusion of the ceremony. The rev gentleman is buried beside two of his old friends—Mr A. F. Stark and E. B. Fox.

A telegraph station is now opened at Kingston, Lake County, Otago. A serious accident happened to a man named Anderson, yesterday, at Flowery Creek hill, between Stafford Town and the Arahura. It appears that Anderson, who was driving Mr Singer's horse and cart with a load of passengex-s from hence to Hokitika, was descending the hill, when a portion of the harness broke, the trap thus being precipitated on to the horse, threw Anderson out, breaking his leg, whilst the other occupants of the vehicle escaped uninjured. Anderson was immediately conveyed to the Hokitika Hospital, where the resident surgeon at once set the broken limb, and we are glad to learn to-day that Anderson is now progressing favourably.

The monthly inspection of the local Rifles wiU be held at the Adelphi Hall to-morrow evening, when, we understand, all those members who are willing to go on active service, if required by the Government, will be requested to give in their names. The names also of any persons who have previously been members of the Volunteer force or Militia, and who also are desirous of offering their se vices, will be taken by the officer in command, for transmission to the Government.
