This is the first case of the kind ever brought into Court. Complainant, who had been outbidden at the sale and hoped to get half of the penalty was actuated by-interested motives. The case was dismissed, 'defendant paying costs.

■ The man recently convicted for stealing a pie from Dr Lemon's house on the Terrace has been'iudeutifiecl as Plummet- a notorious 'Auckland criminal and several other offences have been laid to his charge. It is probable the first section of the West Coast Railway will be commenced in a few days.
The International commission, write to the New Zealand Commission, under date the 4th inst, that there will be shown in operation at the Exhibition machinery the method on a working scale for the extracting precious metals not only fr>m untrated tailings, but those which have been treated by ordinary processes, and in which a notable per centage of gold and silver have been left. This method it is believed, will save 50 or 60 per cent of the gold left in tailings which have gone through the grinditig operations of machines such as Wheeler's or the berdan pans. The process ia a cheap one, and ought to greatly [increase the production of gold in New Zealand. It is requested that samples may be forward for treatment at the Exhibition and operation will be conducted under the supervision of officers of the Commission. New Plymouth, June 19.
