A large number of persons left by the early tram this morning for Greymouth, to pay the last. mark of respect to the remains of the late Rev. G. T. N. Watkins, whose funeral took place- this afternoon.

Mr Richard John .Seddon has been gazetted a Justice of the Peace for the colony of New Zealand.

Although the new bridge over the Teremakau river is not yet officially opened for traffic a number of people avail themselves of this means of crossing' the river. The contractor (Mr Blake) feeling assured that no person uses the. bridge for the sake of evading the small fare charged for crossing per boat, has allowed the Hospital committe to place a box on the bridge for the purpose of predestrians contributing the money saved by its agency, to the fund of the local Hospital. The inscriptions to be placed upon the pedestal of Cleopatra's Needle have now been, finally decided upon, aiid.at. the personal suggestion of the Queen, it has been resolved to add the names of the men who lost their lives in the attempt to rescue the crew of the Cleopatra during the storm in the Bay of Biscay October, 1877. Karl Montressor, the senior General in the Russian army, died lately at Kursh. He served in the campaign of 1812,. was a Knight of dt George and General of the Cavalry of the Guard. Last year he. celebrated his 50th anniversary as General, and the 70th of his service as an officer. Last New Year's Day he entered on the 95th year of his age. At St. Petersburg, sentries have been placed at the door of every house, to prevent the sticking-up of placards. It is only ridiculed by the Nihilists,' who have kidnapped the new Governor of Cracow to be held as hostage. Mb W. Willway having sold his plans and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mr R. Up johjst (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, &c, in the best style. N.B.—Gentlemen's clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises.—Advt.
