The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, JUNE 17, 1875.

The suggestion • contained in a correspondent’s letter relative to the election of the Hospital Committee, which appears in another column, is one well worthy of consideration. As an institution supported 'by public contributions and under public control, there is little doubt that the election of the governing body of the Hospital should be, as in otbei places, decided by the majority of the votes of the subscribers. Without any disparagement lo the gentlemen constituting the present Commitiee, we have no hesitation in saying that the election of a Committee at a public meeting is to a certain extent a farce, as no sooner is one person pro--10 sed—-the ice as it were broken than the compliment is relimned, and the Coimni.dce is elected in a few minutes by those pi c.' iit, irrespective of their qualifications to vote or otherwise. As the present Committee will shortly retire from olftce, we trust that

prior to that event they will make the necessary arrangements for conducting the election of their successors in the manner pointed out by our correspondent, and whicli we feel assured would give far move general satisfaction to all concerned. At the same time, as this is a large district, we would suggest that if such a course be adopted, the desirability of having an equal number of townspeople and miners on the Committee, which could be easily arranged by having a polling booth both in Kumara and Diliman’s Town. Another and very material point, which would only be effected by an election—the expression of public opinion by virtue of their votes, as to the most eligible persons to form the Committee—is one that can never be obtained in a crowded meeting by a show of hands taken indiscriminately.

The licensing Court for the special licensing district of Kumara will be held at the Resident Magistrates Court, tomorrow morning, at 11 o’clock, when applications will be heard for publicans licenses, renewals, bottle _ and wholesale licenses. - - ’ The usual fortnightly meeting of the Hospital Committee will be held at the Secretary’s office this evening. The committee who so kindly organised an entertainment on behalf of Mr Charles Boasted, which was t > have tiken place on Friday next, have resolved to postpone the performance until the 4th of,July in consequence of the entertainment in aid of the Hospital funds taking:; place 7 oh the 27th inst. ’ The drawing .of Lee Brothers’;, billiard sweep took "place at Dillinan’s Town Last evening. The first prize, was won by Mr Grant and the second by a resident at the Greyraouth coal mine. The committee’s certificate appears in another column. We (Australasian, May 31st) are informed that a match has been,- made between Laycock and Prickett to take place over the champion course, on the Parramatta River, at Sydney, for £2OO aside, on the 30th August next Fifty pounds a side were deposited on Saturday last. : Mr W. Willway haviri| sold his plans and interest in the DyeUng Business; to Mr R. Upjohn (who has become prac-” tically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage.hithprfp afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, <fcc., in the best style. N.B.—Gentlemen’s clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises.—Advt.
