The funeral of the late Mr John Lazar took place at 2 p.m. yesterday, at Hokiitika. About thirty members of the Lazar Lodge left here early in the morning to be present on the sad occasion, and, as expected, there was a very large attendance both of the general public and of members of the Masonic body, with which brotherhood the deceased gentleman was so closely identified. The West Coast Times reports :—The Masons met at their hall at 1 o’clock, when upwards' of one hundred were present, and shortly after 2, marched in procession to the residence of|the deceased, where they looked for the last time on all that was mortal of the late District Grand Master of their Craft. The procession was shortly, after. formed, the Hokitika band marching at the head playing that, wonderul dirge, the “ Dead March.” Then followed the -Masons, immediately before the hearse, after which came members of the Jewish persuasion, the members of the Borough and County Councils, and lastly the general public. In this order the procession wound its way to the cemetery, where Mr Singer performed the Jewish funeral service. Bro. the Rev. E.E. Chambers, in conjunction with Bro. J. Bevan, Deputy D.G.Mj then delivered an address, and recited the Masonic burial service, at the conclusion of which sprigs of acacia were dropped on the coffin,' and the impressive ceremonial terminated.

The formation of a drum and fife band in this town was a project genergally mooted some time since, but .abandoned on account of the difficulty of procuring instruments. There are, we understand, a large number of youths here of musical taste who would willingly be enrolled as bandsmen ; and as we notice the whole of the necessary instruments for a full band
are now to be disposed of by the Hokitika Fire Brigade, we would Suggest to the old committee in the matter, (if still in existence) that they should call a meeting, with a view of ascertaining if the necessary fund? could be obtained to take advantage of the opportunity now offered' to form a good band.
It is stated that they ate tanking a War balloon at Woolwich which is to be sent to the Cape When it is ready,, which will be about Midsummer next, just in time, it is hoped, when the war will be all over. An 'ingenious method of stopping shot- ; holes' has been invented by Mr Henry Harcus, the carpenter of Her Majesty’s ship Yernon at Portsmouth. Mr Harcus’ shot-plug is designed' on what is termed the umbreella principle. When it is required to stop a shot-hole,. the plug is forced through it; and on the line being , pulled, the strap securing the folds of the umbreella is released, while the spiril springs being let go, the whole thing expands. It; is then secured to the side of the ship by meads 'of a bar 'which passes over the end of the tube, aud is hove up with a lever. When collapsed the plug 'Can be forced through a hole 8 inchas in 'iKamater, and when open it will cover a space of 2 feet. The weight of the contrivance is 24|lbs. , - Two herdstaen quarrelled ;on a Nebraska prairie, and each threatened to kill the other, Neither was armed, but there was a gun in their hut, 'a mile away.
