The adjourned meeting of the Hospital Entertainment Committee will be held at Gilbert Stewart’s Hotel this evening, when the aiTangements as to the Ethiopian Troupe and the other portion of the contemplated programme will be finally settled. The members of the Lazar Lodge are requested by the Worshipful Master to meet at the Public Hall to-morrow morning, at half-past seven o’clock, from whence they will proceed to Hokitika, to take part with the various other members of the craft in shewing the last mark of respect to their late District Grand Master, Mr John Lazar. We understand that a large number of the Masonic body are expected from Greymouth this evening, en route to Hokitika, also to testify by their presence on this sad occasion the high esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held. The usual fortnightly parade of the local Rifles will be held at the Adelphi Hall this evening. With a view to meet the requirements of the inhabitants of Westbrook who have presented a numerously signed petition to the Local School Committee requesting that education may be imparted to a large number of children there, Messrs Seddon, Birch, Campbell, and Wylde, as members of the Local Committee yesterday afternoon visited Westbrook, and after inspecting several buildings found one highly suitable for a school-house, which could be obtained on reasonable terms. The Committee subsequently visited the Greenstone, and inspected the Bank of Zealand (lately purchased for a schoolhouse by the Central Board), where they decided on the necessary alterations required to the building, tender for which will be called for to-morrow.
In these days of depression and Colorado beetles, the least item of an auriferous nature proves not only interesting but often encouraging ; and such must have been the case with the fair dispenser at one of our principal hotels when a few evenings ago she wai graciously interviewed by more than half the eligible
bachelors in the township, in consequence of a report circulated that she possessed golden attractions, in fact, was an heiress. We need hardly add that although considerably annoyed, the young lady in question, in dismissing her various and miscellaneous assortment of suitors, was thoroughly cognizant of the intrinsic value of their attentions. Tenders for the supply of 350 blocks will close at Messrs Campbell and Kettle’s, Diliman’s Town, this evening, at 8 o’clock. We would direct the attention of intending contractors to the fact that tenders for the repairs and construction of Hungerford’s bridge; Aruhura-, close at noon on Wednesday next. Plans and specifications can be seen at the Council Chambers, Hokitika. The well-known clock of the Colonial Bank at Dunedin is, it appears, in the habit of celebrating public holidays in the time-honoured fashion. At least, on the occasion of the Queen’s birthday, a Daily Times’ correspondent says that at three minutes to eight on Monday morning he heard the clock strike six! “I went back,” he continues, “at nine, out of pure devilment, and it struck seven ! Five minutes clasped, and it struck eight ! in two minutes more it went nine ! I supposed it was now fairly off ‘the spree ’ and went home to moralise !” Mr W. Willway having sold his plans and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mr R. Upjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kirld patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, &c., in the best styles N.B.—Gentlemen’s clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises-.— Aoyt.
