The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, JUNE 9, 1879.

In consequence of pressure on our columns: through the length report of Mr Bai'ff’s speech, we are compelled to hold OVCJI a-largo —number of_„telegraras and other matter. - The English mail via San Francisco arrived here at noon to-day, and was promptly sorted and delivered by the postal authorities, It is our painful duty to announce the death of Mr John Lazar, who expired at his residence at Hokitika yesterday afternoon. The deceased gentleman was held in the highest estimation by all with whom he came in contact, not alone for his general manner but for his kindly and charitable nature. As a Mason he attained the highest honors possible, and his death will create a painful vacancy in that body that naught but time can ever efface. An emergency meeting of the members of the Lazar Lodge E. 0. (named after the deceased) will be held in the Public Hall this evening, at which every member is requested to be present.

At the Magistrate’s Court this morning before E. Blake, Esq., Ellen Simpson was fined 5s and costs for being drunk and incapable.

Our attention has been drawn to the fact that although there is a public pound, horses are allowed to wander about the streets, more especially on Sunday, to the danger and annoyance of the inhabitants. This is a matter that reflects but little credit on the municipal body of this town as some time ago a sub-committee of the Borough Council was appointed to make the necessary regulations, and draw up a scale of charges in connection with the Pound, and still the matter remains in statu quo. The owners of these wandering animals, being thoroughly cognizant of this fact, turn their horses out with impunity into the main thoroughfare of the town, but we trust the Council will take immediate steps to stop this dangerous practice.

Referring to a local that appeared in our columns on Saturday evening anent Lee’s billard sweep tickets, it should have road “ the number thereof will be recognised” instead of “ not recognised.”
