The s.s. Australia, with the English, European, and American mails (via San Francisco) on board, has arrived at Auckland, punctually to contract time. The news telegraphed has been almost all anticpated by cablegram, but owing to the late hour it was received we are compelled to hold it over till our next issue. Mr Barff announces his intention of. addressing the Electors, at Dillman's tomorrow evening, and at Kumara on the following night. A meeting of the Hospital Committee was held last evening at which it was resolved to publish, on Saturday next, the names of all the annual ticket-holders and also subscribers to the institution. As this list will afford the public the opportunity of knowing by whom the hospital is supported, those persons desirpus of having their nanes placed thereon should at once communicate with the Secretary. We regret to learn that Mr Edwin Blake met with a serious accident last evening, by which both of his hands are severely injured. It appears he was in the act of forcing a cork into a filled bottle and using the palm of his hand for that purpose, when the bottle burst, the glass mutilating his hands in a frightful manner.
Mr James Kerr was elected last night W.M. of the English Lodge of Freemasons, Greytnouth, for the ensuing year. The Globe, under the heading of "Fatal Saturday's," publishes the following rather remarkable paragraph :—The death of the lamented Princess of Hesse on the same clay of the month and week as that of the Prince Consort attracted general attention, but it may not have been so universally observed that Saturday has been a fatal day to the Royal Family of England for the last 167 years : William 111. died Saturday, March 17, 1702 ; Queen Anne died Saturday, August 1, 1714 ; George I. died Saturday, June 10, 1727 ; George 11. died Saturday, October 26 1760 ; George 111. died Saturday, January 29, 1820; George TV. died Saturday, June 26, 1830 ; the Duchess of Kent died Saturday, March 16, 1861 ; Prince Consort died Saturday, December 14, 1861 ; Princess Alice died Saturday, December 14 1878.
