The warning notes of the fire-bell which rang out, shortly after six o'clock kst evening quickly assembled a largo crowd
of persons in the streets, but the cause of alarm, which was a burning chimney in the Hospital Was promptly extinguished without any material damage to that institution.
We have been favoured with the copy of a telegram received this afternoon by a gentleman in town from his brother in Patea, who, in referring to the Native difficulty, telegraphs that "tilings look suspicious." A cablegram dated London, May 28th, which we published on Friday last, stated that the subsidy to be granted by the English Government to Yakoob Khan was fixed at six million (?) lacs of rupees. Subsequent information, however, proves this to be incorrect, the amount granted being £59,388, or six lacs of rupees. The meeting of the Local School Committee which was to have taken place this evening has been postponed till the same hour to-morrow evening. The rush that occurred on the opposite side of the river, at the back of Westbrooke, tluring the last week, will in all probability prove of a permanent and payable nature, as we learn that one party who have driven in a tunnel have obtained the most satisfactory prospects. In a few days we shall be in a position to give a more decided opinion of the bonatide character of the ground, as there are a number of claims in which its auriferous nature wll be soon thoroughly tested.
A problem of more than usual interest to the Boniface community—Does the casting of a single dice constitute Yankee grab been most satisfactorily solved by a well-known though rhetorical storekeeper of this town. Its elucidation was effected as follows : —A regimental surgeon was called in, who decided that it "might a serious case of coming grab ; but Yankee, never !" after which opinion he sadly handed the landlord his initiation fees and departed. Shortly after a dispenser of draughts and bowl-us-out condiments appeared, -who, after an ineffectual attempt to perform the Yankee business with a solitary ivory-parfed-and, retired. A gendarme, attracted by the sounds of bones and hilarity,- then arrived on the scene, and, after a careful examination of the agitating medium and its uses, paid a small donation to the busi-ness-fund of the house, and expressed an opinion that of all the grabs he had perforce made, this was the most unremunerative. After this negative verdict on the part of three distinguished citizens, our friend the storekeeper recorded judgment in favor of three ivories in future.
The Patrie publishes a letter from Tangiers stating that English Engineer officers are actively engaged in erecting at Gibraltar masked batteries of 38 ton guns to command the Straits opposite Tangiers and the coast of Spain. The letter adds that the English authorities object to the Spaniards establishing according to a treaty, on the Brunza promontery, near Centa, guns having a cross-fire with other places, such as Centa and Algesiras. According the same authority, the English officers are instructing Moors at Tangiers at the working of the guns.
Mr W. Willway having sold his plans and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mr It. Uvjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, &c, in the best style. N.B.—Gentlemen's clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises.—Ad vt.
