MINING.

BEEFTON. We take the following from the Inanangahua Herald of yesterday : Battery.—Matters are much the same at this mill as when last writing. The only work under hand is that of putting the tailings through the berdans, which is now all but completed. Mr Barr has not received any intimation as to the date that the Welcome Company will require the battery j probably the . Just-in-Time Company will be the first to come with ctone to be treated, and if so the mill will be idle for three or four weeks yet, but from that date all the heads will be employed for a number ef months, as all the companies will be in with the low levels at present under construction. Pactolus. —The manager is at present driving the main low level, where the lode was on Saturday last from three to four inches thick. Gold was plainly to be seen in the workings both in the extension of the drive as well as in the stopes which are being carried north of the winze. Just-in-Time.—During the past couple or three weeks the reef has had a greater ■westerly course than in the previous driving on the present level, but it is now inclining back to its usual course. It is allowed that the reef is now of much superior gold-bearing quality to that obtained during the previous hundred feet of driving. Fiety-Cross.—Something like a parcel of 50 tonß of quartz is now to grass. According to the appearance of the workings _ there is a favorable prospect of keeping the Bame number of men on as are engaged at present. The quartz now coming out of the mine is considered to be about ounce stone. Hopeful.—Crushing operations will not be resumed till such time as the whole of the block now being wrought can be reduced at one crushing. The size of the blnck is 100 ft in length by about 25ft in depth. The stone iB considered payable, and the reef left under foot is believed to be of a superior class of gold bearing stone. Welcome.—This company's large paddock, which will contain about 250 tons of quartz, is all but full.
