Dunkdin, May 9. A destructive lire occuned in Cumberland street to-day, in the soap and candle factory of Allan and Johu M'Leod. A small pipe containing melted tallow burst, and coming in contaut with a plate of hot iron in a few minutes tbe whole of the piemises were a mass of flames; a tremendous volume of black smoke arose and tbe blaze of tallow, resin, stearine, aud other combustibles was indescribable. The fire spread to Davidson's foundry, destroying part of their blacksmith's shop and setting fire to a three-storey building, in which they have their titters' shop and office. M'Leod and Bros, are completely ruined. Their losses are covered by insurance to the extent of £SOOO, but the destruction amounts to at least £IO,OOO. They had only last night completed the ereetion of plant which one of the brothers had brought with him from Paris and Philadelphia, for the manufacture of steaiine caudles. Davidson's loss is covered by insurance to the amount of £ISOO at the very outside. Wellington, May 9. His Excellency the Governor presided to-day at a meeting of the Commissioners of the Sydney Exhibition. The Frisco mails will be.sent from Lyttelton to Dunedin by special train. Mr Fox addressed his constituents last uight making a violent attack on the Government, individually and as a whole, in a two hours speech. He received a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.
Westport, May 9. The wife of J. C. Crawford, pianist at Sheehau's Royal Hotel, left her home at daylight ou Tuesday morning, aud has not been heard of since; but one man avers he saw her on the beach the same evening, and a woman is positive, she saw her in the street, coming away from the fire which happened that night. The woman was supposed to be demented by a long course of drink, and as she has been heard to say " she would burn the place down," coupled with the tacit that she left the house, as she said, to make away with herself, much anxiety is felt about ber. The police have searched hopelessly.
