The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. FRIDAY, MAY 9, 1879.
. The “Hokitika.Lilies” will make their first appearance before a Kumara. audience this evening, at the Theatre Royal, they having kindly placed their services at the disposal of the Church of England Committee, in aid of the building fund. Apart from the fact that these talented amateur vocalists have been on several occasions highly applauded by large and critical audiences, the object. for they, appear this evening, taken cornoj with their being visitors, sured, be sufficient to guHWfee them a hearty welcome at the hands of a crowded audience. We would again remind ticketholders that the private entrance by the side door will be opened at 7.15 p.m., and to secure seats it will he necessary to attend early and with tickets, sis none will be sold at this entrance.
An accident occured to a miner named Richard Evans, at dunes’ claim, Quhm’s terrace, Westbrooke, early this morning, by which he received some serious injuries. It appears that he fell over the side of the
face, striking the. ground SOft. below. Assistance was immediately rendered by his. mates, and Dr Unstable, on being informed of the circnmstances promptly proceeded to the spot, and on examining Evans, found that he had sustained severe injuries to his back* besides several extensive bruises. He was brought over to the Hospital during the afternoon' by Dr. Huxtable’s directions. ' Special attention is directed to an an- ■ nouncement from the Registration officer, which appears in another column, by which it will be seen that any person whose name has been objected to on the Electoral Roll of the district can on application to Dr. Giles, and giving satisfactory reasons, have the objection withdrawn or obliterated. Should sufficient inducettlsnt offer the head teacher of the State School (Mr Wilson) intends establishing evening classes, at which the higher branches of education will be taught. As this is a matter in which we have heard the desire expressed repeatedly that such an opportunity should be afforded to those desirous of improving their education, we have little doubt that Mr Wilsons class will, when established, be well attended, His Honor Judge Weston was occupied all day Wednesday in the District Court, Greymouth, in hearing the case Foley v. Keech and Molloy, a claim of £3B, with damages £lO, for the detention of property in the shape of a Berkshire sow pig and her progeny, which plaintiff claimed. Four witnesses and the plaintiff swore that the pig in dispute was plaintiffs property, and the defendant and an equal number of witnesses swore that the pig was defendant’s property. The Court counsel, and the public adjourned at midday to examine the animal in question, but seemed to have gained little information, as, when the Court adjourned ■last night, his Honor said it would be necessary to have another examination before giving judgment. Mr Guineas appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Perkins for defendant.
