Christchurch, May 6. There are some sixteen cases to : be heard in Chambers against Stndholme, of South Canterbury, in each of which he lias applied for a special .jury. This was one reason of changing the place of trial from Timaru to Christchurch, as it was supposed that sufficient special jurymen for the sixteen cases could not be obtained in the southern town.
Wellington, May 7. In the Supreme Court to-day Mr R. J.Duncan’s deed of assignment was declared completely executed. The Exhibition Commissioners have rented St. George’s Hall as a depot for New Zealand exhibits.
Auckland, May 6: At a meeting of the Auckland Presbytery, the Rev Mr Bruce received a call to Whangarei and One to Waikato. In consequence of the abolition of: timber duty, Messrs Bagnal! and Op, of the Thames, hud expmt trade so endangered that should the present unsatisfactory state W affairs continue till the end of, tlpj month, these large mills will i>e- closed till ihey improve and ihe mill hands placed in the bush. A very destructive fire took place at Lawrence, this morning, originating in Meyer and Co.’s premises. The insurances are, as far as known :—Meyer and . Co., £IOOO —in Northern, £SOO ; - Liverpool and London, £SOO. These two . sums were on the stock, the building - ; being the property of the Colonial Bank. . Meyer and Co. estimate their loss at £IBOO. D. - Johnson-was-ituiaved Cor. £SOO as follows -.—Standard for £300,. ! , and in Norwich Union for £2OO ; both sums heihgon the building only ; James Crowl, £IOO in the Norwich Union on building and stock ; the Colonial Bank, £4OO in the New Zealand Company! ' May 7. In a letter to'the Chamber of Commerce Mr Macandrew says be has long desired to have a dying survey made of a line between Hokitika and Lake Wanaka but he is doubtful whether this can be done satisfactorily this 'season. He. believes this line will bear favourable compa*ison with any other, and'will lie a necessary extension of the .Oitgo contract.
