The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 1879.

Tlie City of Sydney, with the European and American mails, arrived at Auckland to-day, her due date, notwithstanding the steamer crossing the Atlantic was a day late. Hie City of New York, carrying the Homeward mails, was sighted, and reported encountering a heavy gale. She hove-to for eleven hours. Our telegrams will appear to-morrow.

We are requested to state that the Agent of the Government Life Assurance Department, Mr Rudd, can be inter-

viewed to-morrow, at Mr Gilbert Stewart’s, by those persons desirous of seeing him prior to his departure for Christchurch on Friday morning.

t At the usual weekly parade of the local Rifles last evening, a challenge was considered to fire a friendly match with the Grey month Rifle Rangers, on the Queen’s Birthday and nnamionsly accepted. The team will consist of ten men ; and it was resolved that those members desirious of

representing the local team should compete on the range here on Saturday next and the following Saturday, the ten highest scores on either of these days to constitute the team.

We understand that there is every probability of another old resident of this town shortly leaving for “ fields and pastures new,” in the person of Mr Comfoot, who has disposed of las Saw Mills and plant to Mr Blake. The departure of Mr Cornfoot, from amongst us can but be regarded with regret by all those who had the interest of the district at heart, as from the first no public question of any importance has ever arisen in this town in which as a citizen he has not taken a prominent part, and by his plain and strightforward manner of giving his opinion in regard thereto, he has materially assisted in its ultimate developement for good to the place. Commander Edwin wired the following last evening ; —“ Bad weather is expected between north-east and north and west — glass further fall—expect much sea within 24 hours. ” We only hope the prognostication if our weather prophet may be fulfilled, as the scarcity of water is now seriously felt throughout the district generally.

Owing to a typographical error that did “not” appear in the Christy Minstrels’ program me last evening, we have been inundated with telegrams and letters in regard thereto, suggesting the instant extermination of the offending member of our staff. We can assure the indignant Burnt-cork Knight that his last urgent despatch, containing orders to “ hang the devil,” will be expeditiously and heartily executed—when he arrives.

Mr W. Willway having sold his plans and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mr R. Upjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his snccessor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, &c., in the best style. N.B.—Gentlemen’s clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises.—A pvt.
