[press agency.] Wellington, Apiil 29. The City of Sydney, with Loudon mails to 27th March, left San Francisco on April 14th, contract date. The Austral! i, with the March Colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on April 23rd, one day in advance of contract date. Several changes arc to be made in the command of the Union Steamship Corn* pany’s steamers. Captain Sinclair, of the Tararua, Iras been appointed to the Arawata; Captain Muir, of the Claud Hamilton, succeeds to the command of the Tararua; and Captain Newman, of the Arawata, has been promoted to the command of the Claud Hamilton. The Wellington Patent Slip Company has declared a dividend of 5 per cent. Both the New Zealander and the Chronicle argues in their leading articles .the necessity of a new loan. The first pile of the new railway wharf was driven to-day.

Hokitika, April 28. Three tunnel claims at Back Creek, near Woodstock are on good gold. If the fourth claim strike gold it is probable the ground will carry a large digging population. There is nothing yet to cause a rush, as it is not yet proved that the discovery is anything but a patch. Hophs to the contrary are entertained with some reason so far. Jansen Christianson, the sailor who was ticcidently huit while discharging timber from the Prosperity, died in the Hospital last night, six hours after his leg had been amputated. Deceased was 23 yearss of age, and a native of Hjorring, Denmark. Reepton, April 28.
A detached unoccupied cottage iu Broadway was burnt to the ground at 1 o’clock this morning. The circumstances were very suspicious, and an inquiry will be held. It was insured in the Union Company for AIOO. A public meeting is to be,held here to-night to form a tire brigade and purchase an engine.
