The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, APRIL 29, 1879.

A meeting of the Arahura Road Board will be held at the Town Hall this evening.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Hospital committee is postponed from this evening, until Thursday.

The Local School Committee hold a special meeting at the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, to make temporory provision for carrying on the State School, as the head master and two of the female teachers terminate their engagements on Wednesday. • All the members of the Committee were present; and Mr Wilson, who Has lately arrived from Melbourne, and who holds very high, credentials, was appointed headmaster, pro tom. Mr Bussle was permanently appointed master of the Greenstone school, vice Mr O’Neil (resigned), The remaining vacancies were authorised to be advertised in the West Coast papers, and the Committee adjourned until Fridayevening next, when the applications which may be sent in will be considered.

A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, the report of which and also Councillor Seddon’a report on his late interview with the Government relative to several matters affecting the welfare of ihe district is unavoidably held over.

The following telegram, signed x ‘ Hugh Pollen,” received by Mr. F. Stanhope this afternoon, has been handed -us for publication :— l, Mr Seddon has not- been gazetted as Chairman of the Arahura Road Board.”

The audited balance-sheet of /the Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade, which appears in another column, is a document of both a remarkable and satisfactory nature, and one that might not be inappropriately termed a “clean sheet,” inasmuch as the assets and liabilities arte similarly explained by the one word, “nil.” Although this state' of things is highly gratifying, yet we can but regret that the Brigade has deemed it necessary to disband under existing circumstances ; and it is to be hoped that the inhabitants of the town will take immediate action in this matter, as iu the event of another conflagration taking place and no organised brigade to act, the consequences that would probably ensue can hardly be estimated.

The usual weekly parade of the local Rifle Volunteers will take place this evening, at which a challenge from the Greymouth Rifle Rangers to fire a match at Greymouth on the Queens Birthday will be considered.

The mail from Dillman’s Town now closes at the Post Office at 11.45 a m., arriving from that place daily at 11.30 a.m. Mr C. Janion, of this office, was the fortunate winner of the harmonium belonging to St. Patrick’s Church, which was disposed of by art union last evening, as that church has lately purchased a splendid Hamlin organ. The man who rescued the Hon. Mr Macandrew from drowning in the Dunedin Harbour in 1861 has (says the Age) been despatch to the home whence no traveler returns. His name was Henry Entwhistle a painter, and he was killed recently by Francis Mills, a watchmaker, at Campbelltown, Tasmania. Mr W. Willway having sold his plans and interest in the Dykino Business to Mr R. Upjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dye hats, feathers, gloves, &c., in the best style. N.B.— Gentlemen's clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises.— Advx.
