In the Police Court, yesterday, Stevenson, an hotelkeeper at Renwick, was charge d under a statute of George 11. with disposing of a pair of ponies and carriage by lottery. It was cantended for the defence that the statute was not in force in New Zealand. Judgmeut was reserved for a week. Wellington, April 21. An adjournment of the Supierae Court for two hours was asked for today, in consequence of the absence of a material witness, but the Judge refused, and the Court adjourned for all day, the counsel who applied paving costs. The Resident. Magistrate has decided not to al’ow counsel’s costs unless in cases over £5. Many of the cases of typhoid about the city are supposed to be spread by infected milk. Complaints were made to-day that a bailiff had been taken away from the charge of property by an official of the Court, without the permission of the person who caused the bailiff to be put there. The Magistrate said if any person suffered any damage from the action of the official, he the said complainant, could proceed against him, and recommended him to pursue this course. Christchurch, April 21. The Judge to-day would hear no argument re the person who should bear the blame of the failure of the Schwartz prosecution case. He said it was a matter for the Law Society to deal with. April 22. Montague Dodd, clerk to Messrs Joyce and Williams, solicitors, has been committed for trial for stealing £4O, the property of the firm.

Governor from Sydney to Wellington, and after coaling will leave port on Thursday for Auckland. Wellington, April 21. Joseph Bull, formerly proprietor of the New Zealand Advertiser, died on Saturday. A cargo of fish from Port Underwood arrived to-day and found ready sale. The Lena and another Cutter aie to regularly employed in the trade. A curious fight occurred in a gentleman’s stables residing on the North-East Belt. Early on Sunday morning the groom, who sleeps on the premises, heard an unusual noise, and going down stairs found that a man had effected an entrance. He challenged the man who said he would stop where he was, and seizing one of the forks made desperate lunges at the groom, who glancing round, spied a bucket of bran and an axe handle j the former he smothered the intruder with, ami then closing with him before he could recover ejected him the place. The affair is in the hands of the police.
