The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 1879.

We are compelled to hold over several telegrams and other matter till next issue. Good Friday was observed in Knmara as a holiday, all the Government Offices and shops usually closingon Sundays being closed all day. Drays and vehicles were, however, plying about as on ordinary days, and several tradespeople we noticed, pxrsued their customary occupations. The mid-day mail arrived from Hokitika at the usual week-day hour, though with but a very small mail. The Greymouth trams also ran as on week days, but carried no mails. Service was conducted as on Sundays in the Church of England, morning and evening, and in the evening, also at the Catholic Church, the attendance in the evening at both places being good. All claims, rights, and privileges lawfully held by miners and others in the districts of Kumara, Greenstone, and Waimea, are, by a proclamation by the Warden of this district (M. Price, Esq.), which appears in another column, protected during the Easter holidays, that is, from Thursday the 10th to Tuesday the 15th April inclusive. The programme of the concert in aid of the Stevenson family, to take place on Monday next, appears in another column, and will no doubt be well patronised by the public of this district, who are ever ready to lend a helping hand in cases of bereavement and distress. A grand demonstration of the Good Templars takes place on the afternoon of the same day, when the whole of the members, headed by the band, will march in procession. All members in the district are requested to meet at the Public Hall, at half-past two o'clock, for that purpose. The Rev. W. West will preach at Stafford Town to-morrow afternoon, and at the Presbyterian Church, Kumara, in the evening. The Bible class which is held on Monday evenings has up to the present time not been as well attended as might be expected, but this is greatly owing, we understand, to many persons being unacquainted with the fact of its being held weekly. The Fete at Greymouth on Monday next in aid of the Kaitangata Relief Fund should attract a large number of visitors from here, as the programme is of a highly amusing character and many of the prizes offered are well worthy of competition. Not many horses were drawn for Kumara subscribers in Cameron's £4OOO sweep, only three tickets out of 175 disposed of here winning prizes. If, however, the average be taken, we find there is only one prize, or one horse, to every, 108 tickets, so that it may be said that one and a fraction more than the average came here. Ticket No. 3792, held by M.0.D., an Italian living at or near . Callaghan's, drew Vampire ; 741, J C. Isbister, drew Laertes ; and 3279, J. A. S. Smith Dillman's Town, drew Titania. Cookson's Sweep, we learn, will be drawn to-night, and as there are only 37 horses in the race (including starters and non-starters) if all the tickets be disposed of, as we understand they will, the prizes fall to only 1 :w 162.

A fire broke out at 5 o' clock yesterday morning at Haworth's sawmill, Gibson's Quay Hokitik. The sawmill, machinery, and timber wore toially destroy ed. The Fire Brigade was late in arriving at the scene of the fire, and nothing was saved. The origin "of the fire is unknown, as the mill has stopped work for six weeks. The insnrance was as follows :—£looo South British, £SOO New Zealand. Mr Klein announces in another column that his Grand Art Union of jewellery, &c, will take place on Saturday, 19th inst.

On Thursday the Jackson's Bay Commissioners sat for the last time in public. The evidence of Messrs Mueller, M'Rae and Cox was taken, but nothing of the slightest importance was disclosed. The Commissioners are now engaged in the preparation of their report, a work which will occuppy them at least four or five days as there is a large mass of evidence to go through. The Engineer to the Harbour Board reports on the condition of the piles in the old lighter jetty, Lyttelton, after 13 years use, to the following effect:—The iron bark piles are scarcely touched by the sea worm one or two worms having got just under the sap wood close to the surface; piles of Matai are untouched where they have been charred and tarred, even the sapwood is sound, a few worms have got in wherever the wood was cut and the end of the grain exposed to their attack; piles of grey gum or some other species of Eucalyptus from Sydney are bored to some extent but not seriously.

Mr W. Willway having sold his plans and interest in the Dykin.i Business to Mk R. Upjohx (who lias become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind p itronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean and dve hits, feathers, gloves, itc., in the best style. N.B.—Gentlemen's clothes cioiiieJ, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises.—Aovr.
