Wellington, April 8. In the case of John J. Jones, who killed the cook of the Loch Fergus in self defence, the Judge, after carefully reviewing the facts of the whole case, pointed out that Jones did not pick up the capstan bar until the cook was approaching him with an iron bar. He told the jury that if they believed that Jones considered his life to be in danger by the cook, then they must acquit prisoner. The jury, after a short retirement, returned a verdict of " Not guilty," and accused was discharged. Two doctors stated in evidence that the skull of the cook of the Loch Fergus was the thinnest they ever saw. The blow given would not been fatal to an ordinary skull. Judge Richmond directed attention to the want of something like training ships or reformatories for young criminals.
Henry Anderson, of the Chronicle, ha*? been fined fir an assault. The Magistrate admitted that the assault was committed under great provocation, but Anderson did uot go the right way to work.
Arrived: Wave Queen, from London. E. A. Grahani, :i cabin passenger, was washed overhoafd while walking towards the cuddy. His wife was aboard. She brings 40 passengers and a general cargo, Mr Linklater, the carpenter of the Lorraine, was fined £T> and costs for ill-using a lunatic placed under his care on the way out.
April 9. In the Supreme Court, this morning, the lad Bacon, who robhed the Anchor Company's office, was ordered to be relnased, upon his father and another entering into recognisances for £IOO each, for bis subsequent appearance at Court, if ever required. The Judge said that though the lad deserved punishment, he did not wish to send him to a place which could only make him worse than he really is. He thought the public interest would be best served by such a course.

In the Supreme Court this morning to one Fidget, who was convicted of burning stacks, the Jiulgf said prisoner's whole conduct indicated he feared neither G;d nor man. The sentence would be. ten years penal .servitude. The Government intend to prosecute Robert Graham, undci the Native Land Act, for occupying land at Rotorun. Opunake, April 8. The Hinemoa landed 37 Armed Constabulary and a quantity of stores heiv this morning.
