districts are also free from rebels. Diaund, chief of Bourial, and 150 of his men, are still at large amongst the mountains, but it is expected they, too, will surrender in a short time. On the 26th a dreadful murder is reported at Bourail. Two convicts members of a band of fifteen armed against the rebelsj shot their commander dead in his bed. When the deed was dicovered others immediately gave chase and wouuded one of the murderers, who surrendered. The other one escaped.

On March 23rd, Nondowar, Chief of Oanala, brought in forty rebels, amongst whom wasthe infamous Chaim, who shed a good deal of blood, and several other noted murderers. Six ot them were immediately shot, and the rest sent into exile. The few blacks not yet taken are leading a miserable life, hiding amongst rocks and forests, completely crushed in spirit. It is estimated that abont 900 blacks have been killed, 1100 captured and banished to neighbouring isles since the revolt in June, 1878. On the afternoon of the 7th news was received of the killing of ten rebels and the capture of the same number of prisoners by the faithful Kone tribe. This tribe, 400 strong, commenced operations against the insurgents, and put them to flight without being aided any way by the whites.
