At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before M. Price, Esq., R.M., two repentant imbibers were each fined 40s and costs, or seven day’s imprisonment both promising to immediately enlist in the Temperance army. Thomas Kiernan was charged on the information of the police with using indecent and obscene language on the Ist inst., within the hearing of persons in Seddon street. Mr Perkins appeared for the defendant, and after hearing the evidence of Constable Nash which was corroborated Mr J. Falvey as to the language used on the occasion, the defendant was fined 40s, or seven day’s imprisonment. In the civil case of Williams v. Matchett, Whitnall and Jones, in which Mr Perkins appeared on behalf of the plaintiff, a claim of £l7 4s 9d, judgment was recorded against Jones for £ll, with costs of Court £1 16a, extra mileage £2 10s, and counsels fee .£1 Is. In Talbot v. Moyle claim £1 17s 9d, and Falvey v. Sheedy, claim 18s, for the breaking of plaintiffs’ window by defendant’s children, judgment was given for plaintffs, with costs of court.

There were a large number of passengers by the Christchurch coach which arrived last evening In consequence of the mail coach reaching the Loop-line Junction an hour or more after the usual time, the coach from here was detained, and the afternoon tram for Grey mouth left without the mails, which were forwarded early this morning.
