FATAL ACCIDENT.—MR. WM. PITT DROWNED.
We regret to have to record the death of a gentleman well known on the Coast, Mr W. Pitt solicitor, of Reefton, through au accident in the Arahura River lust evening. The West Coast Times of to-day supplies the following particulars of the distressing occurence :—The Kumara coach, driven by Mr A. Glennie, reached the north Bank of the Arahura river last evening about dusk. On arriving at the lower ford the horses became restive, and were taken out of the coach. The passengers, Mrs Evans Messrs Keer, and Pitt alighted and Mr Pitt got on one of the horses in order to cross the river. The horse bucked and threw him into the water. A rope was thrown to him which he missed. As he was floating under the bridge, he was heard to call out, asking which was the best side to get out. Nothing more was seen or heard of him although immediate search was made on both banks of the river by MrQuinnand a number of Maoris and others, who were provided with lanterns. There is unfortunately little doubt that Mr Pitt must have been carried out to sea and drowned.
