Auckland, March 17. Arrived—Star of the North from London, 118 days out. Owing to the wreck of the steamer Geelong, G. W. Binney, auctioneer, has suspended payment. Liabilities comparatively small, assets favourable. Mr and Mrs Otto, of Port Charles, East Coast, were accidentally drowned while crossing Stoney Bay to visit their relations.
Dunedin, March 17
Judgment was given in the Pol : ce Court to-day in the case of Thomas Dodson, of Empire hotel, chared with permitting gambling in the shape of a Calcutta sweep in his licensed house, and Drake and Collins for being pecuniarily interested in consultation sweep in Dunedin Cup race. Defendants were convicted but the fines were made li'dit as they were prosecuted for the first time. Dods<m, was fined h've pounds and Drake and Collins ten pounds and costs. Notice of appeal has been "iven in en eh case.
Charge against Thomas Richards and Peter Cairns, a tailor and a cabdriver, for an affray, to wit. a priz<> n\'ht on'thn Ocean Beach was dismissed, the Binc'i holding that no affray to (he terror of her Majesty's subjects had taken place, although it was proved that defendant had stripped and formed a proper ring and aid-:d with .>*eec.nds fought over a d-izeii rounds on the sand.
