[PKE.SS AUENCY.] Wellington, Maich 14. A fire was discovered at Cohens, jewellery shop, Lamhfcon Quay, last night, but it was not allowed to break through the building. The less valuable portion of the stock which was not in the safe was damaged with smoke, th* building was vpry little injured. The stock was insured in various offices for .£l2oo ; the building in the National, for ,£BOO. NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. Nelson, March 13. At the presentation of prizes this afternoon in the Botanical gardens, where the local Volunteers paraded with the representatives under the command of Major Lean, there was a large attende: ce. After the distribution of the money prizes Ballitiger and Gordon, the Rifle Carbine Champions, were called forw ird, and Mrs Suter, (wife of the Bishop of Nelson), in presenting the Belt to the former, congratulated him on having proved the best shot where all had been ;so unusually good, as the sc >ivs this year having been higher than ever before. To Gordon she sa:d it was a comfort to know that in oar Island Hume we hail such a competent Naval Brigade, composed of men of thorough determination, steadiness of arm and eye. Major Baile, on behalf of the Association, thanked Mrs Suter for presenting the prize?, and for her words oi encouragement. Cupt. Wilson, on behalf of the members of the Association, then presented Mrs Pitt with the bullet she had fired on the opening of the meeting set in the centre of a handsome gold brooch. Cheers were then gave for the Champion and ex. Champion Paynter, and Mevi-ns secretin v. B.f.re division of parade Col. Packe, addressing his men, cong.atulated them on the success of the first meeting ot the Association, which was beyond all expectation, and said n> more suitable place than Nel<on could be found in the Colony, and as there was an excellent, range, beautiful country, kind and genorous pe .pie, and lovely climate. The conduct and discipline of the camp has been all that could be desired. He then called for three cluers for the Mayor and Citizens of Nelson, which were given; when the Mayor returned thanks.
